The flag was raised by Captain John Paul Jones on the captured British ship, Serapis. This was one of the most famous Revolutionary naval battles fought on September 23, 1779. During the point-blank battle, when asked by the British captain if he was ready to surrender, Jones replied “Sir, I have not yet begun to fight”.
